Panaracer Tires is proud to announce the formation of the Panaracer/Stan's NoTubes p/b Bicycle X-Change Gravel Team. The team will compete in gravel, dirt road, and ultra endurance races in 2016. Headquartered in the Flint Hills in Kansas, the Gravel Team will work closely with Panaracer Tires in Japan and the USA to develop new tires and test existing models.
With challenging gravel terrain in every direction, the unlikely Kansas location has become a hotbed of gravel competition in recent years. The team will pride itself on juggling the demands of full time employment with travelling around the US to some of the most exciting new races popping up in 2016.
The team will race on the Panaracer Gravelking line of tires. The acclaimed tires come in slick and small knob (SK) versions. Smoother events such as Belgian Waffle Ride will ideal for the Gravelking 28c tire, while rougher events like the Barry Roubaix will utilize the GK 32 tire.
2016 Panaracer Gravel Team Roster
With diverse backgrounds, the team brings experience from more established cycling disciplines, and other sports such as speed skating. The Dirty Kanza, a 200-mile epic through the team’s home roads of the Flint Hills has become the crown in the US Gravel Scene’s calendar, and will be the target event for the 2016 season. Bob Cummings, team manager, has found success at the DK 200 in the past, after a 4th place overall in 2014. After spending more than a year riding and racing on the Gravelking line of tires already, Cummings is certain they will handle the abuse the team is expecting to give them, “We’ve been testing the Panaracer tires for the last 12 months, and we’ve found that our home terrain of the Flint Hills to be the most challenging in the country. The rocks out here are sharper than anything else. Other races may have bigger hills, but for tires, it doesn’t get any tougher than the Dirty Kanza.”
Scottie Weiss is a recent convert to the world of gravel racing from the pro road scene. Weiss is known as a world-class climber, and will be aiming for the podium in some of the biggest races of the year. The Crusher in the Tushar, with 10,000 feet of climbing through southern Utah, will be the perfect course for Weiss and Panaracer’s Gravelking 40 tire.
